Patellar Luxation

Patellar luxation (kneecap dislocation) is a common condition in dogs that can cause pain, lameness and arthritis. The condition typically causes a skipping lameness in small breeds but is now being recognised in large breed dogs, especially Labradors.

Cruciate Ligament Rupture

Cruciate ligament rupture is the most common cause of lameness in the dog, which if left untreated can cause significant pain, arthritis and loss in quality of life. We would like to thank Tom and the staff for putting a smile back on our staffie , Saphie’s face. After months of pain and limited walkies our local vet finally diagnosed a torn cruciate ligament. Saphie was put onto a waiting list at our local vets to undergo surgery to repair the injury. We were quoted a ridiculous amount just for the op but was told that after care would be at an extra cost. We were worried as our vet also told us we would have to pay upfront then claim the amount back from the insurance ourselves. After waiting 10 weeks and still no word on the op we did a little research and found Tom within a week she was in having the op. From the first telephone conversation to our last visit where Saphie was given the all clear to be able to resume normal activities the team showed professionalism and compassion for the pet and the owner. They gave us a fixed price which was considerably cheaper than my local vet and what’s more I didn’t have to worry about the insurance they sorted it all out for me. Cannot recommend Tom highly enough. Thank you ever so much.

We literally cannot thank Tom and the team enough. We contacted the clinic in May 2023 as our Dalmatian had been diagnosed with a ruptured cruciate. They went out of their way to make it as easy as possible for us as we were travelling from Pembrokeshire. We unfortunately found out at the first appointment that our Dalmatian had two ruptured cruciate ligaments, something our vet practice had missed. It was a worrying time for us but Tom and the team put our minds at rest throughout the entire process. In November 2023 we went through the process for a second time, and the service and treatment was again amazing. Louise went out of her way to help us battle our insurance company who were initially refusing to pay. What could have been a very stressful and expensive experience was made a lot easier by the support of this amazing team. And Tom was the only surgeon who would give us a fixed price with no hidden extras. We had our final follow up in January this year and our boy celebrated with his favourite doggy cupcake treat. He is now back to his mischievous, naughty self, something that after 12 months of pain is lovely to see, we’re not sure the seagulls on the beach feel the same though as he won’t stop chasing them! 🙈😂 The professionalism , dedication and friendliness this team show is just amazing. We are owners of three chihuahuas, two of which were referred to Tom for luxating patella surgery by our regular vet. Initially, we were very anxious about it, as a couple of years ago, we lost one of our chihuahuas who has been referred to a vet in Bristol for tests. We explained this to Tom on our initial visit and he did his upmost to allay our fears, whilst explaining that there is an element of risk in all surgeries. Tom explained all about the surgery and whist we were still worried, we felt that Cassie, the first to have surgery, was in very safe hands. Tom agreed to telephone us, or get a nurse to telephone us, as soon as the surgery was over. He realised that it was an anxious time for us. Thankfully, surgery, not without its difficulties, due to congenital issues, went well and we received a prompt telephone call from a nurse advising us that Cassie was coming around lovely. When we later went to collect Cassie, we were extremely pleased to see that she was completely comfortable in the arms of the nurse, who clearly had fallen for her. Only lots of vets and nurses don’t like dealing with chihuahuas as they can be a little unpredictable. Thankfully, this was not the case at this practice. Cassie,s after care went really smoothly. We had some small issues to do with Cassie not wanting to take medication but the Practice arranged for her to have liquid medication, rather than get stressed over the tablets. Which was something we were very grateful for. We were expecting for Cassie to be hesitant on subsequent visits but this was never the case. She was happy for staff to take her from us, which, given that she needed surgery on her other leg, was very reassuring for us.Cassie,s second surgery also went really well and we were less stressed about it as we were aware that Cassie could not have been in better hands.Amico, needed surgery for luxating patella as an emergency. Given that we already had experience of Tom,s skills and the lovely staff at the practice, we were far less worried than we had been originally. Amico,s surgery was more straight forward than Cassies had been as he did not have the added congenital issues. Again, we received a telephone staff to let us know he was out of surgery and was doing really well. We collected him later that day and apart from being sleepy, he was fine and seemed very content with staff.Amico recovered well and we received telephone calls from the practice post surgery checking on his progress and providing us with advice needed.Tom is an excellent bone surgeon. We are pleased that our vet recommended him as he did a brilliant job on all three surgeries. The after care was fantastic and all our dealings with staff was really positive. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for caring for our much loved chihuahuas.We have a third chihuahua, Bailey, who unfortunately is a kooky as a box of frogs. He hates people and I have always worried in case he ever has to have surgery at another practice. However, in view of the outstanding care and handling Cassie and Amico received from Tom and his staff, I feel sure that if, at some time in the future he would need luxating patella surgery, we would feel confident that Tom and his staff would be able to deal with him successfully.We highly recommend this brilliant bone surgeon to all pet owners. If they can deal so successfully with chihuahuas, then they can deal with anything.

Would highly recommend this surgery. Tom and his team are great with my dog Cassie.very approachable and friendly always. She had to have cruciate surgery last year and unfortunately has to have the other leg done now. I am happy to return for this to be done by Tom, I’m confident she’s in safe hands as an excellent job was done previously . I would highly recommend the clinic to anyone whose fur babies need this kind of operation. Fantastic work guys 😊

Absolutely fantastic. Tom and the whole team have been brilliant throughout with my dog Zuko (cruciate ligament disease and ruptured ligament) I can't recommend Cardiff Canine Knee Clinic enough - friendly, helpful, and always happy to answer questions / concerns, the after care has been fantastic.
